It’s funny. My job involves so much public speaking yet so little writing. Yet my communication professor told me that the written media is essentially an oral form of communication in that it’s the author talking to the reader. I’ve aspired to write things that would be helpful, which hopefully my spoken messages are. But to write something down? My thoughts, humor, insights, and illustrations are woven into a visual and audio presentation. To write for the mind’s eye is another thing altogether.
On top of that, I already wish to recant my spoken messages (more for style and clarity than content). How could I write? Well, hopefully I grow a little wiser and a little clearer with time. Perhaps in 20 years or so, some of my thoughts may have been developed to the point they may be helpful writings.
What business have I in writing a blog on the Internet? Well, I consider these pre-writings: thoughts, insights, questions, and observations that strike me as worth remembering. Sometimes I surprise myself with a rather poignant point or incisive insight from my talks. Other times, a thought hits me that I think, “Say, I wish someone would write a book on that! Maybe when I’m wiser I shall attempt just that.”
So you are invited to collaborate with me for the next 20 years, or however long I have. I’d like to begin putting down stuff. Much of which would probably not be worth the bandwidth it rides on. But maybe there will be a nugget of wisdom here and there. Perchance there may even be a gold nugget of wisdom. Maybe in 20 years, I’ll have learned enough to put something down in writing that will really help someone.
This will start mainly with my wife, then a few individuals whom I know, respect, appreciate as friends, but mostly, I have been secretly envious of their ability to think, reason, meditate, ask questions, and just be brilliant in their own ways which are quite different from my own. Maybe for the first year, it will just be my wife. We’ll see.
